Car Shipping Economics: Holiday Shipping

Most people are familiar with the ideas of supply and demand. When demand goes up, prices tend to go up. When demand goes down, prices go down. The auto transport industry is no different. When there are more cars going one way on a particular route, the demand and thus the price for that particular route in that particular direction go up. On the flipside, if you’re going in the opposite direction, you can expect to get a great deal. This idea is called seasonality, and it is something most industries experience.

Who Are The Snowbirds?

One of the best examples, and the one most relevant at this time of year, is a group called the “Snowbirds“. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, these are people who move from the North to the South (particularly the northeast to Florida) during the winter, and back again for the summer in order to avoid the extreme heat of the South and extreme cold of the North.

We here at Montway want to make sure that you are always getting the best price, so here are some tips to try and avoid the holiday peak prices, or take advantage of some great rates:

Timing Is Everything

If you are looking to ship a car along one of these routes during their peak season, but also looking for a great deal, consider rearranging your schedule to take advantage of the best deal. While prices are steadily going up, you are generally going to get a better rate now than you will in 1 or 2 months. If at all possible, avoid the weeks around Christmas and New Years. This is when prices will be at their worst. If you aren’t looking to ship in the next couple of months, consider pushing your Florida car shipping plans back a couple of weeks after the New Year.

Go Against The Flow

If you’re someone who likes to go against the flow, or if you just happen to need a car shipped in the opposite direction of one of these routes, then make sure you take advantage of the best prices you will find all year. Much like prices will steadily be going up for routes headed South, you should expect a decline in the routes headed North as well. Pushing your plans back a little might just save you a little bit of extra cash. You should still be wary to try and avoid the times around Christmas and New Years.
