The two Nissan Sentras I’ve owned within the past ten years may not have been pretty, but they certainly delivered. Every day, I need my car to get to and from work. Every weekend, I like to visit family and friends, from Indiana, to Chicago’s North suburbs, Wisconsin, and beyond. From commuting to shopping, my life would come to a standstill without a set of functioning four wheels.

Beyond necessity, my car is a part of my life story. Friends rely on me if they need to drive to the hospital or airport. Alone in my car, I can sing at the top of my lungs, rant in privacy, talk intimately with friends, or just let my mind wander.

My current car’s name is “Helo” (the Greek sun god who drove a chariot across the sky every day), because it rescued me from transportation purgatory! In 2011, my first car, “Roxy,” was totaled in a freak accident. Luckily, no one was hurt, but in a moment, I lost not just a favored possession, but the key to managing my life.
Fortunately, I was able to purchase my parents’ car, but without that resource, losing my car could have cost me everything.
