January is National Soup month, and this year we’ve needed it more than ever, thanks to Winter Storms Gorgon and Juno. Luckily, I live with an amateur chef, so as winter’s worst wears on, we’ve just gotten more creative with themes and ingredients.

Spending so much time cooking up new combinations, considering stock options and my portfolio of recipes, I realized that a good company is in many ways like a good soup.

Recipe for success

In 2006, Montway owner Mike began working from his home office as a broker with a few dealerships and auctions, transporting to the East and West coasts. Mike had recognized, however, that there was a niche market just waiting to be filled for inbound and outbound shipping to customers. Within a year, Mike acquired his first large account and first two trucks, the beginning of the carriers division. Today, after just seven years, following a clear recipe and putting in the right components, Montway Auto Transport has risen from a one-man organization to a number-one, nationally-known business.

A strong base for the business

A good base makes a good soup. The base of Montway’s operation is a conscious commitment to customer service, at every stage of vehicle transport. This base, however, wouldn’t hold up without the dedication of the people who support it. Our team members are people who always ask if there is anything we can do better, and not a single person will decline the opportunity to listen to a customer’s concerns and suggestions as to what could make their experience an overall more positive one.

Colleagues gather around a state-of-the-art espresso machine for friendly, open, and positive communication.

Holding it together

Chicken soup is good for the soul, but moving a customer’s’ car, his or her most precious possession, requires a heartier dish. Serving up higher quality, in a bowl or on the road, requires the right thickeners. Our company is so robust because all team members, from Logistic Support to Claims, from Dispatch to Development, are specialists in the industry itself. Smooth service is provided by keeping everything we need in-house. And the nuts? We understand that our job may not necessarily end when the car is delivered. No matter what or when, our specialized support team is there to make sure the customer is always satisfied.

Add, mix…and blend well

The right ingredients balance and enhance each other as well as the final product. Our employees are unique individuals with irreplaceable experiences, knowledge, and opinions. Most integral to this medley, however, is how well we work together as a team.

Employees with outstanding customer service skills also make the best colleagues because of their friendly, open, and positive communication. Not only do all staff have a voice, they are also encouraged to address issues head-on, express their thoughts and potential solutions, and accept constructive criticism. Company culture knocks down the walls between the front of house and the back of house, and supports that open and respectful communication.

Every employee is honored with a personalized cake on his or her one-year anniversary.

Engage to energize

No soup would be satiable without a little spice. At our office, colleagues gather together, not around the conventional water cooler, but around a state-of-the-art espresso machine. Staff are recognized weekly for high achievements and every team member is honored with a personalized cake on their yearly anniversary.

One of the best perks of working here are the super-charged outings; the last company-wide event was a literal “Xtreme Xperience,” where staff had the opportunity to explore and experience the power of exotic supercars at the Autobahn Country Club track.

Staff really enjoy all the supercharged outings.

A pinch of spice can work wonders in most groups as well as soups; if you add a little, it won’t take over, but will give you a wonderful depth of flavor.

The Executive Chef

Just as the chef de cuisine is ultimately responsible for making sure the ingredients in a soup to work together, so too strong direction and mission clarity are essential for an effective office environment. Montway managers lead by example and maintain a positive attitude. Leaders who make sure staff understand how their work fits into corporate objectives and cultivate a strong sense of belonging nourish deep commitment to the company and other colleagues–serving up a great company and more importantly, a great place to work!
