What is TrueCar?

TrueCar is an online resource for car sellers to receive fast, accurate pricing for their vehicles. Using the TrueCar website, sellers can connect with certified dealerships interested in purchasing their cars, removing the time and stress associated with selling your car to another individual on your own.

How does TrueCar Work?

Sell your car through the TrueCar website by following these simple steps.

Selling a car with TrueCar

Step 1: Go to and click “Sell Your Car” at the top of the homepage

You’ll need to enter your zip code and either your license plate number or VIN.

Step 2: Enter details about your car

You’ll be prompted to enter additional information about the vehicle, including:

  • Trim, style, engine and mileage
  • Interior and exterior colors
  • Additional features and equipment
  • Accident and title history
  • Damage to the body, mirrors, lights, windows and interior

Be as specific as possible to get the most accurate quote.

Step 3: Get a cash offer

Based on the information entered (it’s important to be as accurate as possible!), TrueCar will calculate a cash estimate within 60 seconds. If it’s your first time using TrueCar, you’ll be asked to provide your name, phone number and email address.

Step 4: Head to the dealership

The cash quote provided by TrueCar is good for three days. Take it to a certified dealership within that period to complete the sale. All other transaction details will be handled between you and the dealership.

Pros and cons of using TrueCar

  • No fees for selling a car
  • App available for easy access
  • No haggling on price

  • Only works with dealerships
  • Dealerships may not honor the quote provided

TrueCar reviews

“It was very easy to sell my car. I just went to their website, entered my license plate, and *boom* I got a cash offer. I told them I have a higher offer from another dealer, and they quickly matched the offer. On the day of, selling the car was very quick, too. He did a quick car inspection, went to the bank with me to deposit the check, then we were done! Very fast and simple process. Liked it.”
Vincent ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“The purchase offer does not mean anything. My purchase offer was $13,775, then the dealer that they referred me to offered $7,500, saying my car was not in high demand. That’s the way it works, the offer has nothing to do with what a dealer will pay.”
